Weekly Mt. Pulaski High School Events - October 7th through October 11th:
Kuznik Medals/Qualifies for Sectionals; Wade Misses by One Stroke
The Hilltoppers golf team competed in the Illini Central Golf Regional at Country Hills GC in Greenview today.
Aaron Kuznik continues to play well as he shot an outstanding score of 80, earning him another top 5 finish and his 3rd medal of the season as he tied for 4th place overall. More importantly, his low score earned him a qualifying spot in the sectional tournament next Monday at Spring Lake Golf Course in Quincy. Congratulations Aaron on your round today and for qualifying for the sectional tournament.
After shooting a 46 on the front, Franklin Wade set a goal of shooting 43 or less on the back to stay in the 80’s. He then came through with 5 pars on the back, including a chip in from 30 yards, and just missed his goal by shooting a 44, and an overall round of 90. As the last groups came in, we knew Franklin was on the bubble for the top 10 individuals to qualify for sectionals. Unfortunately, the cutoff score was 89. As heartbreaking as this was for Franklin, he should be very proud of the grit and determination he showed on the back nine. 5 pars was outstanding!
Carter Clark got off to a rough start shooting a 52 on the front. Asking him to shoot a 45 or better on the back nine, he responded in a big way with a great score of 42, and a respectable 94 overall. Nice comeback, Carter!
Clay Leonard, Kai Selinger, and Tyler Lowe all asked that we not mention their scores on Facebook, so I will honor their wishes (lol). However, I do want to mention that all three of them came back with much improved scores on the back 9; Clay had a great birdie on hole 13; Tyler bettered his score by more than 10 strokes from when he played here earlier in the season; and Kai, as always, had a great attitude whether he was playing well or not. So good job guys!
As the season comes to an end for Franklin, Carter, Clay, Kai, Tyler, and Deegan, Coach Charron and I could not be prouder of these young men for the time and effort they put in over the summer and last few months, and the tremendous improvement each of them have made whether they realize it or not. All have set new personal best 9 and/or 18-hole scores, showing their potential for even better scores for next season. Way to go, Toppers!
The players and coaches would like to thank all of you who have supported the golf team this year. We are proud to represent MPHS and the community and look forward to doing it again next year.
Good luck at Sectionals, Aaron!

4th Place Finish, New Low Team 18-Hole Score, Personal Bests The Topper golfers finished the regular season today at the 2024 Ray Toland PORTA Invitational at Shambolee Golf Course in Petersburg. Eleven teams battled windy conditions with the Toppers coming away with a 4th place finish and another new season low team 18-hole score of 368. Great job, guys! Aaron Kuznik’s 88 was the low score for the team and earned him a medal for his 9th place finish overall. Clay Leonard had the second lowest score for the Hilltoppers with a personal best 18-hole score of 92. Splits of 47 and 45 were also season firsts for Clay to shoot under 50 for 9-holes. Congratulations Clay! Franklin Wade and Carter Clark both shot 94 to round out the top four team scores. Both players continue to shoot in the 40’s for 9-holes even when they feel they are struggling. This is a great sign for the scores both of these players are capable of achieving as they continue to improve. Tyler Lowe and Deegan Tschantz shot 102 and 133 for the team. Tyler’s score was also a personal best 18-hole score beating his previous best by 10 strokes. Had it not been for a rough first hole, he would have broken 100. Tyler’s round also included a 48 for his first 9-hole score under 50. Congratulations, Tyler! The Toppers will play in the Regional tournament next Wednesday at Country Hills golf course in Greenview. 13 teams and 76 players will compete for a chance to move on to the Sectional Tournament which will be held the following week at Spring Lake Country Club in Quincy. Wishing you the best of luck Toppers! Your coaches are very proud of you!!
